Animal Antics & A Note

Dawn @ Guiding Light Homeschool suggested I add the hounds (dogs) jumping over the fence from yesterday's post to her Animal Antics meme.  I didn't want to list just the hounds, after just blogging it yesterday....so, I am offering up this little "ditty."

Please visit Dawn and link up to Animal Antics!

I am trying to put some "things" aside, so I can do a Thirty Days of Gratitude Post....it isn't a good day, but that will change.  I am a child of the KING of kings, the LORD of lords, God will grant me peace in all situations.

I am concerned for a friend that is going through all kinds of difficulties with two of her grown children.  She is also raising a granddaughter and there are some medical issues they are trying to get to the bottom of.  If you would, please lift "Bren" in prayer today.

Also, the Senate voted for "Cloture" on Senate Bill 510 late last night.  I feel this is a terrible bill and we need to let our senators know.  The vote last night was not good.  Please pray that nothing outside of God's will would be accomplished in our legislative branch and that the blinded eyes of our congress would be opened.

In the meantime, go by and read the latest posts in the Thirty Day Gratitude Challenge!  They will make your heart soar!  Just click on the button.

(I'm back.  This is the edited addition.)

Today, (Day # 18), I am thankful for the friends I have made through blogging!  We are from different spots around the globe, we have a variety of interests, some have big families, and some are empty-nesters.
There are those of us who live in the country and there are those who live in big cities, some are SAHMs and some are out there pursuing careers,
but
we are FRIENDS
and
I AM BLESSED!

A confession for today ~

Our GOD is an Awesome GOD!

Thirty Days of Gratitude and The Simple Woman's Daybook

New followers, WELCOME!  Make yourself at home.  I will be by your blog as quickly as I can and return the follow.  The last two days have been busy, but I have noticed you and can’t wait to get to know you better!

Outside my window...  ~ our beautiful fall is giving way to cooler,  sometimes cloudy days and the trees that were so lovely a few days ago, are mostly brown.

I am reminding myself ~ life is a cycle; we should look for the joy in each season.

I am thinking...  ~ Thanksgiving and all there is to do.

I am thankful for...  ~ many things and I have failed to post in the Thirty Day Gratitude Challenge the last two days.  So here is some of the things I am thankful for:

Sunday, November 14 ~ I am continually amazed at how good God is toward us.  I won an i-pad a few weeks ago.  It came, it sold and now dd#1 & family have a full propane tank.  His Provision.

Monday, November 15 ~ I am thankful for all the little things we take for granted each day:  running water, a place to rest, food, clothing, hot water….there is nothing equal to the gift of hot water when I bathe….it allows me to relax and let go of the stress that sometimes accompanies my day.  The Little Things.

Tuesday, November 16 ~ Our garden has meant many things this year.  Together we have worked it, in the evenings we have enjoyed sitting in the garden and visiting, with each other and with friends.  It has been an outdoor classroom and our harvest has been amazing!  Yesterday, we picked the last of the tomatoes and peppers, again.  This is the third (last) time and still it has continued to produce.   Our garden.

I am wearing...  ~ Pajamas (it is only 3 something in the morning….but I may not change - just saying).

I am remembering...  ~  Orange Slice Cake, I always baked it for Mom & Dad this time of year.  I would bake three loaves – one for Thanksgiving, one to put in the freezer for Christmas, and one to keep for us.  I’ve only baked it once since Mom passed away.

I am praying for… ~  an online friend who is going through a particularly difficult time.

I am going...  ~  to be cleaning house, getting ready for Thanksgiving.  It is my favorite holiday.

I am currently reading...  ~ my Bible and not much else.  It has been a busy time, not a reading time (for me).  I miss it.

I am hoping...  ~  for an opportunity to share God’s goodness with others

On my mind...  ~  our children

Noticing that...   ~  I have a lot of lovely, new fall decorations, thanks to a new friend in Maryland.

Pondering these words…  ~ “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

From the kitchen...  ~  there will be the delightful smells of green tomato relish in a few hours  (P.S.  The boys hate to smell chow-chow (the relish) cooking.  lol)  I love it!

Around the house...  ~ I am creating… ~ a place of rest; where peace is a tangible quality, a place where people want to come.

One of my favorite things… ~  the smell of fresh ground coffee perking

From the Learning Room… ~  reading, creativity and some outdoor activities (before the weather really turns wintry)

A picture to share… ~

I will miss autumn!

Be sure and visit The Simple Woman's Daybook for more daybook entries and stop by Brenda's for for more Gratitude posts!

May your day be blessed!
Cheryl

P.S.  The relish is nearly done.  I'm still in my pajamas.  Sorry, to be so slow at posting.;)

Meet Me On Monday

Be sure to visit Java at Never Growing Old for more Meet Me on Monday entries.

"Its a great way to meet new friends and for others to get to know me better....one Monday at a time!!!"....as quoted by the Chacogirl!! I will make this SIMPLE and FUN!!!

(All ya gotta do is answer five little questions!)

1.  Do you eat Sushi?

In a word, NO.  In all fairness I have never tried Sushi.  I have also never tried rattlesnake, possum, or squid, along with a number of other things…nor do I intend do.

2.  What kind of bath soap do you use?

I use an all natural goat’s milk soap.  My favorite fragrance is Sandalwood.  It’s wonderful.

   3.  How often do you talk to your Mom?

Mom passed away in 2003.  We visited several times a week and the last 4 years, she
lived with us.  I talk to my mother-in-law nearly everyday.

  4.  What TV shows do you watch on a regular basis?

We do not have dish/cable/etc. and I am not a big TV fan (there was a time, I was).
We do have an international satellite (Galaxy 19), where we can watch movies,
news, educational programs and Hebraic studies.

5.      Did you start Christmas shopping yet?

A little, mostly I have my list made, along with ideas.  I have ordered a couple of things online and I picked up a few small items at a craft fair last weekend.

Have a great week!
Cheryl

Thirty Days of Gratitude, Day 13

Click on the above image for more Gratitude posts!

"It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy."

from the Hip-chick @ A Collection of Days

I’m a little, okay maybe a lot, lazy today. I am just trying to take things slow, so maybe it isn’t laziness but some sort of weird self-preservation instinct that has kicked in.

I'm woman, I can rationalize!

Anyway, we are baking for the neighbors. Right now there is a pan of Blonde brownies in the oven. Next on the list we’ll bake a huge batch of oatmeal cookies. I am even going to be nice to the family and fix pizza burgers for a late lunch with a big salad.

I notice many of those participating in the Gratitude Challenge are thankful for Netflix. We don’t have Netflix, but it started me thinking. Over the years, we have learned so much from movies and the older TV programs.

My kids have a better understanding of what their grandparents have told them about the Depression, because they have watched The Waltons.

From the Little House series they’ve learned many things. They know about the one room school houses, that even when holidays are sparse they can be happy, that our relationships with neighbors and friends is important, that hard work is a positive experience, and there will always be people like Harriet Olson.

After years of watching Davy Crockett, we watched a TV show from the 50’s the other night about Jim Bowie and the history of the “the Arkansas toothpick” – the Bowie knife. They immediately made the connection of Jim Bowie being at the Alamo. They know about the Mexican – American War and when we get to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
they will have a better understanding of the time frame surrounding the treaty.

I can’t begin to list the creative antics they gleaned from watching Hal Roach’s Little Rascals. But possibly my favorite “incident” came last December. This is from my journal ~

“We have crossed a threshold of sorts! We have struggled with this homeschooling journey for several years now. There have been ups and there have been downs. Some times I was most grateful for what they "weren't" learning at public school....since they didn't seem to be learning a lot here at home. Still we pressed onward.

The last few days, we haven't done much school. I have been busy and dh has been working on the new well house. The boys have helped with the building of the well house....and that is a positive.

But in their spare time...they have built a two-seater bicycle! Yes, a bicycle built for two and it WORKS! Mind you, they built this from scrap pieces of old bicycles. (Our scrap yard of bike parts is nearly as bad as some of our other junk!) I am so proud of their imaginations and creativity!!!

Not only that, since we haven't been doing "school" per say during normal school hours, now they want to read at night! What???? What's with this? Usually, I have to fight to get them to read! And the one who is the hardest to persuade to read, has started reading the Hardy Boy series on his own! Huh? I am not kidding!!!

So, the lesson here....is never give up! It will happen and once their creative minds take hold, watch out!!!”

Think about the following:

Where did you first learn or hear about Hydrophobia? Old Yeller

Is your child learning Spanish from Dora? When our granddaughter, Chasey, was about three, she kept asking for something but I could not figure out what she wanted. She was persistent, but I didn’t “get it.” Finally, her aunt (dd # 2) came in and said, “I’m pretty sure she is asking for a cookie ~ in Spanish.” I gave her the cookie and she was one happy, Spanish speaking, three year old.

Has your crew learned following one’s dream can pay tremendous dividends? Let them watch the movie Wild America, the true story of "Wild America" host Marty Stouffer and his two brothers photographer Marshall and producer Mark as young boys in rural Arkansas. Together they set out to discover and film North America's endangered wildlife.
(You might want to preview before showing it to young children.)

And around the house ~

Is your daughter learning fractions by helping with the household’s baking?

Is your six year old becoming more proficient in math by playing dominoes?

Aren’t you grateful, that homeschooling affords you the chance to experience many different learning opportunities, but perhaps the best is it offers our children the ability to know how to learn, rather than merely being “taught.”

And even if your four year old calls you, “Dispectable,”~ thank you, Daffy Duck ~  they are working on that vocabulary!!!
Have a very blessed and wonderful weekend!

Thirty Days of Gratitude ~ Day # 12

Today I am thankful for all those people who are willing to express

KINDNESS!

Be sure and click the above picture for more posts on GRATITUDE!

I have a little plaque that says:

"He who is hardest to love, often needs it the most."

It is true, isn’t it?!

Over the years, many people have expressed kindness toward both me and my family. As a matter of fact, God has used some unusual characters to bless us in special ways.

One of them is “Donnie”. Donnie started visiting us a few years ago. He is a little older than our grown children. He was a student when dh was doing his student teaching years ago. Donnie is a little slow, but super likable. He mostly cuts wood or deals in junk (scrap iron). *Dh (my superman/give them the shirt off your back husband) gave Donnie the truck he drives.*

When Donnie is without a job, he comes by and eats dinner (only we call it supper) with us. When he needs a little money, he comes by.

Now, you might think we are the ones showing kindness, but that isn’t true.

Donnie always brings the boys something! It might be ball caps (the kind businesses pass out for advertising), it might be a box of games, movies, books or most anything. Off hand, I can name – 2 pogo sticks, 2 razor scooters, 1 motor bike, numerous bicycles, clothes, TV, VCR, DVD, a play station….it’s a long list!

To dh he has brought ~ motors, compressors, generators, material to build sheds with, cages….this too is a long list.

Donnie has never brought me a great deal of “stuff”, mostly a cookbook now and then or some unique glassware (to pour candles in).

But a few years ago, during January, I was having a difficult time. (Sometimes, I think I have seasonal dysfunctional disorder ~ or whatever they call it. Too many cold, cloudy days just isn’t my cup of tea.) You know the old saying, “Thirty days has September, April, June and November…all the rest have thirty-one….except February and January. It has about 60 somethin’!” Well, that’s the way I felt and I was really whining complaining to the LORD.

You should know, I am crazy about “smells!” That is how I got into aromatherapy and why I started a candle business. I am addicted to fragrance….and my nose can pick out those expensive fragrances in a heartbeat!

Donnie showed up late one night, hungry. We had some leftovers from supper and I warmed them up. He said, “Hey, I brought something you might be interested in! Let me run out to the truck.” When he came back, he had a box full of essential oils….top grade essential oils. Among them ~ Sandalwood ….Sandalwood is very expensive. I don’t buy Sandalwood essential oil. I buy it in the synthetic form. I can’t afford pure Sandalwood.

That night the LORD showed me, HE can use anyone to bless someone else….even Donnie, who has very little.

Yes, my wonderful box of oils were the result of Donnie cleaning out an older couple’s garage. They had once had a health food store. Did I care the oils came from a garage instead of Donnie paying a king’s fortune at a fancy store? No. Do the boys care that the treasures they receive come out of a pile of scrap iron or because Donnie has helped clean out an abandon storage building? No.

Regardless of your situation, there is someone you can show kindness to. Someone needs your smile, needs to hear a compliment or a kind word. We all have the capability to be an encourager or goodwill ambassadors.

Tomorrow, Saturday, November 13th is
World Kindness Day.

Why not spend a moment or two showing

KINDNESS

I recently joined a group, who’s only purpose is to bless someone each week.  It doesn’t cost a penny and takes just a few seconds of time.  They look across the world of bloggers and when they find one who needs a friendly hug and a word of encouragement, they send out your weekly assignment.  You receive an email each Thursday.  Your MISSION is to drop a “Love Bomb” on a certain person.  You simply stop by this person’s blog and let them know you care and you are willing to pray for their situation.  It really is SIMPLE, but often means so much.  If you are interested, you can find out more here:

And this Saturday, take time to call your aunt you haven’t talked to in ages, send a card….hey, it’s time to send Thanksgiving cards, bake an extra loaf of bread to share with your neighbor, invite the kids next door to help make popcorn balls….the possibilities are endless!  YOU have the ability to MAKE someone’s DAY!

Blessings,
Cheryl

Thirty Days of Gratitude ~ Day # 11

My Veteran!

Today I am thankful for my "better half".

Once when leading a testimony service I stated, "if dh had known what the future held when he married me, he might have backed-out on the marriage." (He assures me, that isn't so.) Perhaps, he would have had second thoughts, though. Who is to say?

I married a "hippie". My mother never completely got over that. Never-mind he was an ex-Marine (I have since learned, there is no ex where the Marine Corps is concerned), who also did three stretches with Oklahoma National Guard. One enlistment before the Marines and two after we married.

What concerned my mother the most was the fact he stood up for ME. Which was one of the things I loved the most. It was his love, that freed me from always trying to please everyone else; that I had two feet and I needed to learn to stand on them. She saw that as rebellion, especially so, when after 8 years of marriage and three children, he insisted I stop cleaning her house every weekend. Did I mention I was also working full time? He also stopped me from  dropping everything to go "fix" Mom's hair. He showed me that she could at least wait until I had the time. Yes, my mother was strong willed and so is my honey.

He is also gentle and caring. He helped me take care of my mother the last four years of her life. He showed more patience and strength than I could ever find within myself. He turned out to be my Mom's favorite.....even over her own children. God knew, we all needed him.

He is a good father and a good provider. We don't have a lot in the materialistic sense, because he is also a "giver." He would give anyone the shirt off his back. Literally! I seen him buy new work boots, only to give them away before they were worn, to some guy he had just helped get a job. Once when we were returning home from vacation, we were still 400 and some miles from home, and we came across an elderly gentleman who was obviously in need of food and basic necessities. Dh estimated the amount of money we would need to finish our trip and handed the older man all that remained. We made it home with $10 to spare! While his generosity hasn't always made our children happy (who likes doing without?), it has passed a legacy on them. They each have a "giving spirit."

When I say, "better-half," he really is.  He thinks long term, I think short term (much of the time).  He sees the big picture, when I seem to have tunnel vision.  He rarely gets mad, rarely looses his temper.  His ways have had a calming affect on me.  There is now an easy give and take between the two of us.

When I was testifying, my point was JESUS  ~ YESHUA ~ could see the future.  HE knew every mistake, every missed step I would take in the years to come!  Yet, HE still chose me as one of HIS own.  And most of all, HE knew the husband I would need to see me through this life; HE knew who would complete me.

Thank you, Love, for making my life complete!  And, Father in Heaven, I am forever grateful for this man YOU sent my way!

And to all our wonderful, brave, and outstanding men and women who have served or are serving our country,  MAY each of YOU and your families be blessed!
May God's goodness and mercy follow You always!

P.S.  While Gabby (oldest granddaughter) was here the past few days, we worked on numerous projects for the holidays and I took lots of pictures to share.  I am having a bit of trouble deciding on how I want to post them.  I need my "techie" son to come by and HELP!  Just wanted you to know, I haven't forgot!!!

Here is a list of some of the things we worked on.  Later I'll post the pictures and instructions or recipes.

Country decorator stars
Foot butter
Candles
Bath salts
Thanksgiving decorations
Banana Nut Bread
and more!
