Sufferin’ Succotash! ~

Jenny Matlock

~ *And Other Favorite Sayings*

New look Bugs and Daffy Pictures, Images and Photos

I love quotes and sayings that have been passed down over the span of time. And I believe often, we are somewhat surprised when we find out their true origin. Like, “I see the handwriting on the wall.” ~ Straight out of the Good Book! “A little bird told me,” you’ll find as a warning in Ecclesiastes 12:4, and one of my favorites, “Straight from the horse’s mouth,” only in this case, it was an ass speaking to Balaam in Numbers 22.

There are famous sayings, for just about any subject, from the powerful words of John Paul Jones, “I have just begun to fight,” to the even more powerful (yet sad) words of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perez , “I will fight no more forever.”

Over the years, I have been amazed at the influence other people’s words have on our own lives. Never more so, then when, my then three year old referred to me as, “Dispectable!” (Yet another that can be attributed to Bugs Bunny ~ or maybe it was Daffy.)

(From my soapbox) ~ Remember the song, “Be careful little eyes what you see. Be careful little ears what you hear. For the Father up above is looking down with love, so be careful ~” ? In this day and age, we need to be especially careful for the sake of our children and grandchildren. If not us, who will be?

Perhaps Peter said it best, “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind.”

“Hardy har har. Au revoire. Adios”

“Okay Okay I'm shuttin' up. Why should I continue to
keep yappin' when I'm told to shut up. I'm not the kind that
don't know when to stop.”

“I knew I shoulda takin' that left turn at Albuquerque.”

Be sure and go by the awesome Jenny Matlock’s and see what others are say about the letter “S” for Alphabe ~ Thursday.

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Blessings,
Cheryl

  1. My son can quote sayings from every book, every movie, every speech...I somehow manage to forget it all.

  2. I so love Bugs Bunny. Me and my Hubby say that stuff all the time. LOL

One of my screen savers said "Yes I know it, I can't help it." It is from one of the Bugs Bunny Operas. What a riot.

George even found me a Gossamer. It is the red guy with tennis shoes name from the cartoons. It is so funny.

    Have a wonderful day.

  3. My husband and I used to quote snippets from films we both loved. Often, they wouldn't mean a thing to anyone else!

  4. Love these! Sayings are so good. "This ain't my first rodeo", as the title of my latest blog says. Another of my favorites "this too shall pass" "nothing ventured, nothing gained". I could go on & on. Have a beautiful rest of the week & weekend.

  14. Hello Cheryl,
I'm beginning to get caught up with other things here around the house since we've been back from Maine. This afternoon and evening I've enjoyed being able to have the time to leisurely check out the blogs that I read on a regular basis. I've had such fun.

I've enjoyed reading yours...loved the history of the "sayings"...and as always your Daybook entries.

Loved the picture for Wade's Wisdom a while back...too cool!

I also realized this evening that I was one of the lucky winners of your give away. I'm so blessed! Thank you so much.

  15. So funny! I lived in Texas some 20 years ago and was surprised to see that road runner birds do exist. I forget their scientific name but it was great to be able to catch a glimpse of them once in a while. Great post. Thanks for sharing.

  18. This is such a fine post...I love the history behind sayings...it is "right up my alley"...you cannot imagine how many times in a day I say these kinds of things...one that baffles me a bit is "under the gun"...the origin is related to the Lighthorsemen, who when charging would race quickly to get under the guns (cannons)...they were safe then...whereas today it is used to denote something almost the opposite
